Consider how your business information appears in AI-generated answers as well as conventional search results. Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, is a useful label for work aimed at that visibility. The practical goal is not to trick a chatbot into recommending your company. It is to publish clear, reliable information that is accessible online, while giving potential customers enough detail to make a decision.

What GEO means for your business

In this guide, GEO means improving content and business information with the aim of making it useful in generative AI answers. Google’s AI search features can include supporting links to web pages. Its documentation explains eligibility requirements, but meeting them does not guarantee inclusion. Do not assume those requirements apply to every AI platform.

How GEO relates to SEO, AEO and SEM

For planning purposes, use SEO for work that helps search engines discover and understand your pages, answer engine optimisation or AEO for answering customer questions clearly, and GEO for work aimed at generative AI answers. Treat these as overlapping areas of work rather than separate packages with guaranteed outcomes.

Here, SEM refers to paid search activity. Google’s AI search guidance states that advertising does not affect a site’s presence in its AI features. Assign paid search and organic content different objectives rather than treating advertising as a way to buy organic inclusion.

Start with an accessible, understandable website

Google Search Central’s guidance on AI features says established SEO practices remain relevant to Google’s AI search experiences. For a page to appear as a supporting link, it must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Eligibility does not guarantee selection. Consult each platform’s own documentation before applying Google’s requirements elsewhere.

  • Check that important service and product pages are not accidentally blocked by robots.txt or noindex directives.
  • Put essential information in readable page text rather than only in images, videos or downloadable brochures.
  • Use descriptive page titles, clear headings and internal links that help visitors reach related information.
  • Resolve broken pages and make mobile navigation, forms and WhatsApp links usable.
  • Use Google Search Console to investigate indexing issues before assuming you have a GEO problem.

Use structured data without treating it as a shortcut

Structured data can describe a business, product or other supported page content in a machine-readable format. Follow Google’s documentation and ensure the markup matches what visitors can actually see. Do not treat it as a guarantee of an AI citation. Google also says no special AI text files or schema are needed for its AI search features, so an llms.txt file is not a prerequisite for those features.

Publish content that answers buying questions

Start with questions your sales and customer service teams already receive. A useful page explains who a service suits, what it includes, what it excludes, how delivery works and what affects the decision. Google’s people-first content guidance is a useful reference: write to help the visitor, not merely to attract search traffic.

Make Malaysian context specific and useful

For a Malaysian audience, relevant details might include supported languages, payment arrangements, delivery coverage and whether service is remote or on-site. If you serve Sabah and Sarawak, explain any genuine delivery or scheduling differences. Do not create near-identical city pages that imply offices or capabilities you do not have.

  • Give a direct answer near the start, then explain conditions and exceptions.
  • Use descriptive headings and lists where they make information easier to follow.
  • Separate verified facts from opinions, estimates and recommendations.
  • Support important claims with reliable references and keep operational details current.
  • Create Bahasa Malaysia or other language versions when you can maintain their accuracy.

For example, a supplier could explain compatibility, ordering requirements, warranty exclusions and delivery arrangements instead of publishing a generic article claiming to be the best supplier in Malaysia. Prioritise details that help a customer decide, without promising that an AI system will quote them.

Keep business facts consistent across channels

Your website should clearly identify the business, its contact channels and how customers receive the service. Check those details against relevant directories, social profiles and marketplace listings. Correct conflicting names, locations or service descriptions so customers receive a clear account of your business.

If you qualify for a Google Business Profile, follow its representation and eligibility rules. A service area is not the same as a physical branch. Do not use a virtual office or occasional co-working booking to imply a staffed permanent location.

Use social media marketing to share useful explanations and direct readers to fuller website resources. For marketplace marketing, including Shopee marketing, check product attributes, fulfilment information and policies for accuracy. Treat this as customer information work, not a promise of GEO visibility.

Measure visibility without overstating results

Do not treat an isolated favourable screenshot as proof of lasting visibility. Keep a repeatable set of commercially relevant questions and record the wording, platform, date and any location settings used for each test. Distinguish a business mention from a linked citation, and describe observations as test results rather than universal rankings.

  • Monitor referral traffic that your analytics identifies as coming from AI services; do not label it a complete count of AI-driven visits.
  • Track whether visitors complete enquiry forms, start relevant conversations or make purchases.
  • Review whether generated descriptions accurately reflect your services and coverage.
  • Use Search Console to monitor Google Search performance, without presenting its data as a complete cross-platform GEO report.
  • Ask new leads how they found you and compare their answers with available analytics.

Use these signals together. Prioritise commercial outcomes and factual accuracy over a visibility score whose methodology you cannot explain.

Build GEO into an ongoing content process

Begin with your most important service or product pages. Check accessibility, correct business information and answer missing customer questions. Then publish supporting guides where genuine information gaps remain. Review enquiries and performance data before expanding. Keep this work tied to business needs rather than producing content simply to mention AI.
