AEO & GEO
AEO and GEO Explained: Marketing When AI Answers First

On this page
Two acronyms have arrived alongside SEO in the last couple of years: AEO and GEO. Both describe a real shift — people increasingly get an answer rather than a list of ten links — but the underlying work is less exotic than the labels suggest.
What AEO means
Answer Engine Optimisation is optimising so your content is used as the direct answer to a question: in a featured snippet, a voice result, or an assistant's reply. It rewards content that answers a specific question clearly and immediately, rather than burying the answer under six paragraphs of preamble.
What GEO means
Generative Engine Optimisation is optimising to be cited inside AI-generated responses — the sources listed beneath an answer in AI Overviews or a chat assistant. The goal shifts from a click to being the trusted reference the model draws on.
What has actually changed
- Some informational queries now end without a click, so brand visibility inside the answer matters as much as position.
- Factual precision matters more, because a model reproducing your claim will reproduce your error too.
- Consistency across your site and third-party listings makes you an easier entity for a model to recognise.
What has not changed
Google's guidance on AI features in Search is that there is no separate technical requirement for appearing in AI experiences beyond the existing Search requirements — the same crawlable, useful, people-first content applies. Anyone selling a secret AI-ranking technique is selling you conventional SEO with a new label.
Practical steps that work for both
Answer the question in the first hundred words
Put a direct, self-contained answer near the top of the page, then expand. A TL;DR box, a short definition paragraph or a clearly worded FAQ answer are all easy to lift and quote.
Use structured data properly
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Article markup describe your pages in a machine-readable way. Google's structured data guidelines require the markup to represent content that is actually visible on the page — marking up content users cannot see is a violation, not a shortcut.
Keep your business facts identical everywhere
One phone format, one address format, one company name, on every page, in your schema and in external listings. Entity confusion is the fastest way to be left out of an answer.
Cite your own sources
Pages that reference primary sources tend to read as more trustworthy to humans and are safer for models to lean on. It also forces you to check claims before publishing them.
How to measure it
- Search Console impressions and clicks remain the baseline.
- Referral traffic from AI assistants, where your analytics can identify it.
- Manual spot checks: ask the assistants your customers use the questions your customers ask, and see who gets cited.
- Brand mention tracking, so you notice visibility that never becomes a click.
What we would tell a Malaysian SME
Do not restructure your marketing around AI answers before the fundamentals are in place. Clear service pages, accurate structured data, consistent business details and content that genuinely answers real questions will serve both a search engine and an answer engine. That is the same list we would have written for SEO — which is rather the point.
